Medical Laboratory Assistant – Temporary Full-Time (up to 3 mos)

POSITION SUMMARY


The Medical Laboratory Assistant (MLA) performs a combination of duties including specimen procurement and processing. The Medical Laboratory Assistant may perform technical procedures under the supervision of a Medical Laboratory Technologist in compliance with current legislation and the policies and procedures of the Manitoulin Health Centre Laboratory.



JOB DUTIES:


  • Perform phlebotomy in both Inpatient and Outpatient settings
  • Inform patients about procedures and give instructions as needed
  • Validate relevant data and ensure that appropriate specimens are procured, troubleshoot as needed
  • Procure and label specimens according to established protocols
  • Validate patient and order information according to lab policy
  • Process specimens according to established requirements
  • Assess specimen suitability and integrity and process accordingly
  • Prepare specimens for transport following Transportation of Dangerous Goods regulations
  • Perform clerical duties with little or no supervision
  • Perform lab tests according to Standards of Practice under the supervision of a Medical Laboratory Technologist (MLT)
  • Participate in cleanup and maintenance
  • Monitor supplies for expiry dates and ensure stock rotation
  • Follow Quality Assurance policies and procedures and participate in quality assurance initiatives
  • Perform only those duties that do not require interpretation, assessment or the exercise of independent judgement
  • Provide training for various laboratory functions including phlebotomy and point of care testing
  • Other duties as required by the Lab Medical Director or Lab Manager

  • Point of Care System proficiency
  • Knowledge of basic Quality Control practices
  • Proficient in Microsoft Platform (Word, Excel and Outlook), Policy & Procedures platform and Learning Management System
  • Proficient in Meditech Lab module


QUALIFICATIONS (Education, Certifications, Experience, Licensure)


Required:

  • Graduate of a recognized Laboratory Assistants course or Medical Laboratory Technician Certificate (One (1) year community college)
  • Current certificate with the OSMT as a Registered Medical Laboratory Assistant


Preferred:

  • Recent/related experience in hospital setting
  • Certification in Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG)
